3 Signs Your Bathroom Waterproofing Has Failed

September 28, 2026

Waterproofing failure is one of the most common reasons Canberra homeowners end up calling us for a full bathroom renovation instead of a simple repair. Here’s what to look for before a small leak turns into a much bigger (and more expensive) job.

1. Bubbling or lifting tiles

If tiles near the shower base or skirting feel hollow when tapped, or you notice slight movement underfoot, water has likely already worked its way behind the waterproof membrane.

2. Discolouration on the ceiling below

A brown or yellow stain on the ceiling of the room below an upstairs bathroom is one of the clearest signs of a failed membrane, and shouldn’t be left unaddressed.

3. A musty smell that won’t go away

Persistent mustiness, even after cleaning, often points to moisture trapped inside a wall or floor cavity rather than surface mould.

All Stellar Bathrooms renovations include three coats of waterproofing certified to AS 3740-2021, backed by a 10-year waterproofing warranty. If you’re noticing any of the signs above, get in touch for a free, obligation-free quote.
